WORLD CUP SOCCER - BULGARIAN COIN SERIES
The Bulgarian National Banks commemorates the Soccer World Cup Tournaments since 1980. Since then there has been an issue for most of the following tournaments, the latest coin in the series being dedicated the the World Cup in Germany in 2006. The Bulgarian national bank has not announced an upcoming coin for the World Cup in South Africa yet.
Certainly one of the most important dates in Bulgarian football history is November 17, 1993, when Emil Kostadinov scored two goals to beat France in Paris, allowing Bulgaria to qualify for the World Cup in the USA in 1994. Under the management of Dimitar Penev, the Bulgarians, led by players like Hristo Stoichkov, Yordan Lechkov and Krasimir Balakov (along with a multitude of other talented players remembered in Bulgaria as the "Golden Generation"), made a strong impression by reaching the semi finals. At World Cup 1994, Hristo Stoichkov was awarded the Golden boot as the top goal scorer of the tournament as he miraculously led his country to the semi-finals. |
