How we calculate it

The score starts from the mintage on a logarithmic scale (500 coins or fewer = 10, ten million = 1). Coins of the Principality and the Kingdom that circulated get extra points, because much of that silver and gold was melted down and many coins were lost in the wars and withdrawn in 1952. Modern commemorative coins lose a point, since almost all of them survive in collections. Finally we look at how often the coin is offered on Balkan Auction: frequent offers lower the score.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features centrally the coat of arms of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria. In circumference around the edge there are the inscriptions ‘НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ’ (PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA), the nominal value ‘10’, the word ‘ЛЕВА’ (LEVS), the year of issue ‘1975’. Below, to the left and to the right of it, in small print are the names of the authors of the design ‘СТ. НЕНОВ’ (ST. NENOV) and ‘ЧАПКЪНОВ’ (CHAPKANOV). The composition is completed with a grainy circle.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin features a replica of a Roman bronze coin minted in Philippopolis at the time of Emperor Elagabalus. Below it there is the emblem of the IOC and an inscription ‘ВАРНА’ (VARNA). In circumference around the edge there is the inscription ‘ДЕСЕТИ ОЛИМПИЙСКИ КОНГРЕС’ (TENTH OLYMPIC CONGRESS). The composition is completed with a grainy circle.
