How we calculate it

The score starts from the mintage on a logarithmic scale (500 coins or fewer = 10, ten million = 1). Coins of the Principality and the Kingdom that circulated get extra points, because much of that silver and gold was melted down and many coins were lost in the wars and withdrawn in 1952. Modern commemorative coins lose a point, since almost all of them survive in collections. Finally we look at how often the coin is offered on Balkan Auction: frequent offers lower the score.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features in the upper part the state coat of arms of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria, with ‘19’ and ‘82’ on both sides. Below it in two lines is the number of the nominal value ‘10’ and the word ‘ЛЕВА’ (levs), framed by two laurel branches. In circumference is the inscription ‘НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА БЪЛГАРИЯ’ (People’s Republic of Bulgaria) and a dotted ring.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin features two footballers with a ball. Around the edge are the inscriptions ‘XII СВЕТОВНО ПЪРВЕНСТВО ПО ФУТБОЛ’ (XII World Football Championship) and ‘ИСПАНИЯ-1982’ (Spain-1982). The composition is finished with an outer dotted ring.

Edge & packaging
