How we calculate it

The score starts from the mintage on a logarithmic scale (500 coins or fewer = 10, ten million = 1). Coins of the Principality and the Kingdom that circulated get extra points, because much of that silver and gold was melted down and many coins were lost in the wars and withdrawn in 1952. Obverse

The obverse of the coin features an image of the Poibrene Cross with ‘БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА’ (Bulgarian National Bank) inscribed in circumference; at the bottom the inscription ‘10 ЛЕВА’ (10 levs) is separated by the BNB logo with the year ‘1879’ on the strip; the year of issue ‘2016’ is underneath.

Reverse

The reverse features an image of Benkovski’s Flying Squadron and a contour inscription of the year ‘1876’ in the background with ‘140 Years since the April Uprising’ inscribed in circumference.

The story behind the coin

140 Years since the April Uprising

The April Uprising of 1876 against Ottoman rule paved the way for the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878. The obverse shows the Poibrene Cross; the reverse shows Benkovski’s Flying Squadron against the year 1876. The BNB marked the 150th anniversary in 2026 with a 10-euro coin.
