The Bulgarian National Bank is releasing a new commemorative coin, “Paisiy of Hilendar, “two golden levs””, on sale from 27 June 2022.

The coin honours Paisiy of Hilendar, author of the “Slavonic-Bulgarian History” (1762). It unusually pairs a 2-leva face value with Au 999/1000 gold, and its issue price of 3,755 leva made it one of the BNB’s most expensive issues at the time.

The coin has a face value of 2 levs and is struck in Au 999/1000, weighing 23.33 g with a diameter of 26.5 mm. Quality: proof, mint state; mintage: 4,000. It was minted by the Bulgarian Mint to a design by Vanya Dimitrova and a Bulgarian Mint EAD team.

Reverse: the image of Paisy Hilendarski in the centre of a pitted circle, the years ‘1722-1773’ on the right; the inscriptions in circumference: ‘ПАИСИЙ ХИЛЕНДАРСКИ’ (Paisy Hilendarski) at the top and ‘БЪЛГАРИЯ’ (Bulgaria) below.

The issue price is 3,755 leva. The coins are sold at the BNB cash desks in Sofia and at branches of DSK Bank, First Investment Bank, Raiffeisenbank (Bulgaria), Texim Bank and Central Cooperative Bank. For the first days of the sale each customer may buy one coin from the BNB. Buying for someone else requires a notarised power of attorney, and coins are not sold to anyone under 18.

Full details are in the BulgarianCoins catalogue below; the official announcement is on the BNB website.
