Coins struck abroad
For its first seven decades Bulgaria had no mint of its own. Its coins were struck by specialised mints across Europe — Birmingham, St Petersburg, Brussels, London, Vienna, Paris, Belgrade, Kremnica, Budapest and Berlin. The very first, the bronze 2, 5 and 10 stotinki of 1881, came from Ralph Heaton & Sons in Birmingham.
A mint in Sofia
The Bulgarian Mint (Moneten dvor) has operated since 1952 and is solely responsible for producing Bulgaria’s legal tender coins. In 1965 it struck its first commemorative coins in gold and silver, with the images of Georgi Dimitrov and Saints Cyril and Methodius — the start of the collector coins in this catalogue.
