How we calculate it
The score starts from the mintage on a logarithmic scale (500 coins or fewer = 10, ten million = 1). Coins of the Principality and the Kingdom that circulated get extra points, because much of that silver and gold was melted down and many coins were lost in the wars and withdrawn in 1952. Modern commemorative coins lose a point, since almost all of them survive in collections. Finally we look at how often the coin is offered on Balkan Auction: frequent offers lower the score.

Obverse
The obverse of the coin features a full-height rampant lion at the top and below it horizontally the year of issue ‘1976’, the nominal value ‘1’ and the word ‘ЛЕВ’ (LEV). The composition is completed with a circumferential border and in the outer ring there are the inscriptions ‘НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА’ (PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC) and ‘БЪЛГАРИЯ’ (BULGARIA) separated by two five-pointed stars.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin depicts crossed dagger and pistol, with the inscription ‘СВОБОДА ИЛИ СМЪРТ’ (FREEDOM OR DEATH) in two lines above them, and the monograms of the authors of the design ‘СН’ и ‘ГЧ’, and the year ‘1876’ in small print below them. The composition is completed with a circumferential border, and in the outer ring the inscriptions ‘АПРИЛСКО ВЪСТАНИЕ’ (APRIL UPRISING) and ‘СТО ГОДИНИ’ (ONE HUNDRED YEARS), separated by two dots.
