How we calculate it

The score starts from the mintage on a logarithmic scale (500 coins or fewer = 10, ten million = 1). Coins of the Principality and the Kingdom that circulated get extra points, because much of that silver and gold was melted down and many coins were lost in the wars and withdrawn in 1952. Modern commemorative coins lose a point, since almost all of them survive in collections. Finally we look at how often the coin is offered on Balkan Auction: frequent offers lower the score.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria at the top. Immediately below the wreath of the coat of arms and to the right of it there is the monogram of one of the authors of the design ‘СН’. The year of issue ‘1976’, the nominal value ‘5’ and the word ‘ЛЕВА’ (LEVS) are inscribed horizontally below. The composition is completed with a circumferential border and in the outer ring there are the inscriptions ‘НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА’ (PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC) and ‘БЪЛГАРИЯ’ (BULGARIA) separated by two five-pointed stars.

Reverse

The reverse of the coin features the image of Rayna Popgeorgieva (Rayna Knyaginya), who carries a sabre in her right hand and a flag in her left one. The year ‘1876’ is inscribed to the left of it. The composition is completed with a circumferential border, and in the outer ring there are the inscriptions ‘АПРИЛСКО ВЪСТАНИЕ’ (APRIL UPRISING) and ‘СТО ГОДИНИ’ (ONE HUNDRED YEARS), separated by two dots.
