How we calculate it

The score starts from the mintage on a logarithmic scale (500 coins or fewer = 10, ten million = 1). Coins of the Principality and the Kingdom that circulated get extra points, because much of that silver and gold was melted down and many coins were lost in the wars and withdrawn in 1952. Modern commemorative coins lose a point, since almost all of them survive in collections. Finally we look at how often the coin is offered on Balkan Auction: frequent offers lower the score.

Obverse

The obverse of the coin features the coat of arms of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria at the top. Immediately below, to the left and to the right of it there are in small print the monograms of the authors of the design ‘ЛМ’ and ‘СЦ’. The year of issue ‘1976’, the nominal value ‘5’ and the word ‘ЛЕВА’ (LEVS) are inscribed horizontally below the coat of arms. The composition is completed with a circumferential inscription ‘НАРОДНА РЕПУБЛИКА BULGARIA’ (NATIONAL REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA).

Reverse

The reverse of the coin features an image of Christo Botev, with Botev’s signature to the right of it, and with the years ‘1848-1876’ inscribed in circumference.

Edge & packaging

Embossed text ‘ТОЗ, КОЙТО ПАДНЕ В БОЙ ЗА СВОБОДА, ТОЙ НЕ УМИРА’ (He Who Shalt in Battle for Freedom Fall, Shalt E’er Live on) edge. Issued in a protective capsule with an information leaflet. The BNB advises keeping the capsule closed.
