Coin albums and binders: how to choose
Binders with sleeve pages, albums with slots, trays and capsules – which suits which coins

Proper storage protects the value of a collection. Albums and binders are the most popular solution, but they are not equally suitable for all coins. The general rules are in How to store your coins.
The types
Binder with pocket pages
Plastic pages with square pockets, held in a binder.
Pros: cheap, easy to expand, both sides are visible. Cons: the coin can rub in the pocket. The quality of the plastic is decisive. Suitable for: circulation coins, coins in cardboard holders.
Album with round slots
Pages with round slots in the exact size of the coin, often by year or series.
Pros: a neat look, ready places for each coin, motivates you to complete the series. Cons: sometimes only one side is visible; the coin is removed and inserted by pressing. Suitable for: series of circulation coins, for example from 1962 to 1990 or from 1999 to 2025.
Box with trays
A wooden or plastic box with fabric or foam trays with round slots.
Pros: elegant, suitable for coins in capsules. Cons: more expensive, takes up more space. Suitable for: silver and gold coins in capsules, proof coins.
Capsules
Rigid clear capsules for individual coins.
Pros: the best protection for a single coin. Cons: you need the exact size. Suitable for: any valuable coin. BNB coins are sold in capsules – do not take them out.
Cardboard holders
A small card with a film window, closed with staples.
Pros: cheap, you can write on the card. Cons: the staples can scratch the coin; the film must be PVC-free.
The enemy: PVC
Soft PVC plastic releases substances over time that leave green, sticky spots on coins. They can permanently damage the surface. Buy only pages and holders labelled “PVC-free”. If a coin is already affected, see Removing PVC from coins.

|---|---|

| Gold coins | capsules in a box, valuable ones in a safe |
| BNB proof coins | the original capsule and box |
| Certified coins (slabs) | slab box |
How to organise
- By period – Principality, Kingdom, People’s Republic, Republic.
- By series – see Series.
- By year – see Coins by year.
- By theme – see Thematic collecting.
Whatever arrangement you choose, keep an inventory. See How to catalogue your collection.
Where to keep the album
- Upright, like a book – not lying flat, so it does not press on the coins.
- A dry place – away from bathrooms, kitchens and basements. See Humidity, temperature and silica gel.
- Away from sunlight and heating.
In short
For circulation coins, an album is convenient and attractive. For valuable coins, a capsule is a must. And always – PVC-free.
