How to buy ancient coins legally in Bulgaria
Licensed dealers, identification, registration and documents – how to collect ancient coins without breaking the law

Ancient coins – Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine – are one of the most interesting areas of numismatics. In Bulgaria they are also the most sensitive from a legal point of view. Here is how to collect them legally. This article is general information, not legal advice.
Why ancient coins are special
Ancient coins are usually movable cultural property under the Cultural Heritage Act. This means:
- Transactions in them may take place only if they are identified and registered (Art. 113(1) of the Cultural Heritage Act).
- Trade is carried out by dealers licensed by the Minister of Culture.
- Export requires a permit or certificate.
In detail – in Cultural property: when a coin must be registered.
The rules for a legal purchase
1. Buy from a licensed dealer
Dealers licensed by the Ministry of Culture can identify and register the coins they sell before the sale (Cultural Heritage Act). Ask the dealer about their licence.
2. Ask for the documents
When buying, you should receive:
- An identification document and registration number.
- A purchase document – an invoice or contract.
- A description of the coin – type, era, metal, weight.
3. Be careful with purchases from abroad
If you buy an ancient coin from a foreign auction house, keep the document of its origin and of how it was acquired. With them the coin can be identified and, if necessary, exported again within the EU (Administrative Register).
4. Do not buy “finds”
Never buy coins offered as “from the field”, “from treasure hunters” or “no documents, but cheap”. This is illegal and finances the destruction of archaeological sites. See Treasure hunting and metal detecting.
Counterfeits
Ancient coins are counterfeited on a massive scale. In Bulgaria there are even “schools” of counterfeiters so good that they deceive experienced collectors. So buying from a licensed dealer is also protection against counterfeits. See How not to be scammed when buying online.
Online listings
Many ancient coins without documents are sold on classified-ad sites and social networks. Most are either counterfeits or from illegal excavations. Avoid them.
Museums
If you want to learn more, visit museums with numismatic collections. There you will see genuine ancient coins and understand what they look like. See Numismatic museums and exhibitions in Bulgaria.
Our focus
BulgarianCoins describes Bulgarian coins from 1881 to today – from the Principality to the euro. Ancient coins are not part of our catalogue. If you are interested in them, look for specialist publications and licensed dealers. The general overview of the law is in What the law says about coins.
